Get behind WHA’s charity of the year and help people in Warrington facing food poverty

Warrington Foodbank has been WHA’s nominated charity for the second year in a row – and is now inviting tenants to get behind the cause.

The demand for Foodbanks is rising: Warrington Foodbank has reported an increase of 17% in the last year with 80 tonnes of food distributed- more than a third of which went to children.

Cash contributions by staff from the office tuck shop takings, dress down day donations and bacon butty mornings raised a total of £642 in the past year – half of which will go to children in Warrington facing poverty.

This year the team hopes to smash last year’s total, and we’re inviting WHA tenants to get behind the cause by donating items at our donation points at our head office, any of our sheltered accommodation schemes or at the LifeTime centre at The Gateway.

WHA team member Lynn, who coordinates our fundraising efforts, said: “Our aim now is to beat the total of £642 raised last year. People can also make cash donations which I will use to either buy any food that is urgently needed or add to the amount we donate to the foodbank. All contributions gratefully received!”

We paid Warrington Foodbank a visit to present a cheque of last year’s funds raised to David McDonald, manager of Warrington Foodbank, who agreed to allocate at least 50% of the money raised to the school holidays project.

On receiving this cheque, David said: “I think it’s quite sad for this prosperous town of Warrington that we still have pockets of child poverty. This cheque will be put to good use and will ensure that children in Warrington receive food during school holiday periods when there is no facility for free school meals”.

Warrington Foodbank works on a referral basis with many local community organisations across Warrington providing food vouchers – including Warrington Housing Association.
