Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mutual exchange?
An exchange is where you swap your home with another tenant/s. It is not a move into an empty property. All council or housing association tenants have the right to exchange your home as long as your landlord agrees.
How do I register for an exchange?
WHA uses homeswap for all tenants who want to exchange their homes either locally within Warrington or outside the area. This is not run by us and is a national scheme which is open to all tenants around the country. If you want to register for a swap please click on the icon and this will direct you to the website.
Alternatively if you do not have access to a computer you can call into our office and use or touch screen in our reception. Or you can pick up a form and register by post.
What are the rules?
WHA will not approve an exchange if it causes serious overcrowding or under-occupation.
The property must be suitable for the incoming tenant- for example, a wheelchair-adapted property must be used by someone who needs this type of specialist accommodation, or sheltered housing must be used by those over retirement age.
You must not owe us any rent or have a notice of seeking possession or court order.
Your home and gardens must be in good condition. We may ask you to carry out works to your home before we agree to the exchange.
What happens when I find someone to exchange with?
You and the person you are exchanging with should view each others homes and if you still want to go ahead you both need to fill out the exchange application forms. These forms should be handed into to us.
When we receive your application form if you are a WHA tenant, we will inspect your home and let you know if there is any works that are needed before the exchange can go ahead. If the person you are exchanging with is not a WHA tenant their Landlord will also want to inspect their home.
We will let you know in writing if the exchange can go ahead. If we refuse permission, we will always give you a reason.
You will both need to call into our office to sign an assignment form for the house you are moving into.
Once this has been done you can then move into your new home. |
